benfica Ex-President Faces Prison Sentence in “Saco Azul” Case

The Public Ministry (MP) today requested a suspended sentence of at least three years and nine months in prison for former Benfica president Luís Filipe vieira in the “Saco Azul” case. The request was made during the final arguments of the trial in Lisbon.

Prosecutor cláudia Caldas also argued for the same sentence to be applied to former Benfica executive director (CEO) Domingos Soares de Oliveira and the club’s former financial director Miguel Moreira. The charges stem from alleged crimes of qualified tax fraud and falsification of documents.

The case revolves around an alleged scheme were the defendants used fictitious IT consultancy contracts to withdraw over 1.8 million euros from Benfica. A significant portion of this money was then reportedly returned to the club in cash.

“From the evidence, it’s clear that this plan originated with the defendant Luís Filipe Vieira,” stated the magistrate today.She added that Vieira later shared the plan with Domingos Soares de Oliveira and Miguel Moreira,who knowingly participated due to their positions within the club.

The allegedly fraudulent contracts were signed between the company Questãoflexível and Benfica Estádio and Benfica SAD. the prosecutor is seeking fines for all three companies involved.

The case also includes three additional defendants: José Bernardes, the owner of Questãoflexível, and José Raposo and Paulo Silva, who are suspected of assisting him in the scheme. The MP has requested suspended prison sentences for all three.
