Punjab Government Transforms Technical Education with Entrepreneurship Bootcamp
In a significant shift from traditional education models, the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is actively fostering an entrepreneurial mindset among students in its Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Polytechnics. This initiative aims to transform students from job seekers into job creators, with the recent launch of a Residential Student Entrepreneurship Bootcamp marking a key step in this direction.
From Job Seekers to Job Creators
The Punjab government has introduced an Entrepreneurship Mindset/Business Curriculum across 322 ITIs and 91 Polytechnics, including 137 Government ITIs and 26 Government Polytechnics . This curriculum is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to develop viable business ideas while pursuing their technical education. Currently, 36,139 students – 28,967 from ITIs and 7,172 from Polytechnics – are actively working on business concepts through a structured digital platform .
The Residential Bootcamp: Nurturing Young Ventures
The first two-day Residential Student Entrepreneurship Bootcamp, held at the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration (MGSIPA) in Chandigarh, brought together 40 high-potential young entrepreneurs selected from government technical institutes across Punjab . These ventures span diverse sectors including retail, professional services, e-commerce, digital platforms, engineering services, manufacturing, and product development.
Real-World Impact and Early Successes
The initiative is already demonstrating tangible results, with some students generating income ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹12,000 per month from their ventures . Examples of successful student-led businesses include:
- A mushroom cultivation business in Muktsar, supplying directly to local consumers, shops, and restaurants.
- An organic skincare initiative in Bathinda, producing handmade soaps and herbal hair oils marketed through social media.
- A nail studio in SAS Nagar (Mohali) promoted through digital platforms.
- An air conditioner repair and maintenance service in Ludhiana utilizing online platforms like Justdial and Dukaan.
- Other ventures include online tuition services, digital marketing, online retail, tailoring, and digital content creation.
Bootcamp Curriculum and Expert Mentorship
The bootcamp curriculum focuses on key entrepreneurial skills. Day 1 centers on design thinking, problem identification, and structuring businesses using the Business Model Canvas to define value propositions, customer segments, revenue streams, and cost structures. Day 2 concentrates on market entry strategies, customer acquisition, marketing material creation, and financial viability . The program culminates in a Student Venture Showcase, providing a platform for young entrepreneurs to present their ventures and receive feedback.
Innovation Mission Punjab is facilitating the bootcamp, bringing in ecosystem expertise. Entrepreneurs like Chhotu Sharma of CS Soft Solutions Infotech, Punit Jindal of Vision AI, Bipanjit Singh of Digiwah, and Manpinder Kaur of Natchkin will share insights on starting, sustaining, and scaling ventures .
Expanding Technical Education Infrastructure
Alongside the entrepreneurship initiatives, the Punjab government is investing in expanding technical education infrastructure. A new government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) is under construction in Fatehgarh Sahnewali, Sardulgarh, Mansa district, with an estimated cost of ₹24.50 crore . This ITI will train 240 students annually in trades such as Electrician, Mechanic Electric Vehicle, Refrigeration and Air Conditioner Technician, Industrial Robotics and Digital Manufacturing Technician, and CNC Machining Technician . The Fatehgarh Sahnewali panchayat has provided five acres of land for the project .
A New Engine for Punjab’s Progress
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has emphasized that the government’s focus is on equipping youth with skills for future needs, contrasting this approach with previous administrations. The government aims to create an environment where young people are empowered to build their own opportunities and contribute to the state’s economic growth .
