Putin’s ‘Hidden Hand’ Helping Iran in Middle East Conflict, UK Defence Secretary Says

Putin’s Influence in Iran-Israel Conflict Raises Oil Price Concerns

As tensions escalate between Iran and Israel, with Iran launching attacks across the Middle East, concerns are growing about Russia’s potential role in supporting Iranian tactics and benefiting from the resulting surge in oil prices. UK Defence Secretary John Healey has suggested that Russia’s “hidden hand” is influencing Iran’s actions, drawing parallels to tactics employed during the war in Ukraine.

Russia’s Tactical Support for Iran

According to Healey, Iranian tactics, particularly the use of drones, have evolved to mirror strategies observed in Russia’s conflict in Ukraine. This includes flying drones at lower altitudes to increase their effectiveness. Lieutenant General Nick Perry, the chief of joint operations overseeing UK military operations, confirmed a “definitive” link between Russia and Iran, noting a long-standing military relationship.

“We have definitely seen the Iranian tactics of the use of their drones learnt from Russians – flying them much lower so they are more effective,” Lieutenant General Perry stated.

Economic Benefits for Russia

Healey highlighted that Russian President Vladimir Putin is the primary beneficiary of the current situation, as soaring oil prices bolster Russia’s economy. Iran’s actions, including its disruption of shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz, have contributed to a spike in oil prices.

“No one will be surprised to believe that Putin’s hidden hand is behind some of the Iranian tactics, potentially some of their capabilities as well,” Healey said. He added that Putin “is clearly likely to welcome this war more than anyone else.”

Recent Incidents and Investigations

Recent incidents include an Iranian-linked drone strike near a Royal Air Force base in Cyprus, and the downing of two drones targeting a military base in Erbil, northern Iraq, by British forces. While there were no British casualties, reports indicate some US casualties, none of which were serious.

Investigations are underway to determine if the drone used in the Cyprus attack contained Russian components.

Trump and Putin’s Interactions

These developments occur following a call between US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to discuss the war in Iran. Trump has also indicated a willingness to ease oil sanctions, a move that would particularly benefit Russia.
