Michael Stipe Revives R.E.M. Classics Onstage with Tribute Act
Michael Stipe, the iconic frontman of R.E.M., made a surprise appearance with Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy’s R.E.M. Tribute project at Brooklyn Steel in Fresh York City on Saturday, March 8, 2026. He performed two R.E.M. Songs, marking the first time he has sung either live in 18 years.
A Night of Nostalgia
Stipe joined Shannon and Narducy to sing “These Days” from R.E.M.’s 1986 album, Lifes Rich Pageant, and “The Great Beyond” from the 1999 soundtrack to Man on the Moon, a biopic about Andy Kaufman [Rolling Stone]. This performance marked the first time since 2008 that Stipe has performed both of these tracks live [Consequence].
Recent R.E.M. Reunions
This isn’t the first time Stipe has joined the tribute act. He previously appeared with them at Brooklyn Steel in 2025 and at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia, in February 2024 [SPIN]. The Athens shows in February 2025 were particularly notable, bringing together all four original members of R.E.M. – Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry – for performances at various points over two nights [SPIN].
The Tribute Project and Future Dates
Shannon and Narducy’s tribute project has gained momentum, prompting a move from the 650-capacity Music Hall of Williamsburg to the larger Brooklyn Steel [SPIN]. The tour, which also features Jon Wurster, John Stirratt, Dag Juhlin, and Vijay Tellis-Nayak, wraps up on March 16, 2026, in Bloomington, Indiana, but will resume with dates in the U.K., Ireland, and the Midwest in September [SPIN].
R.E.M.’s Legacy
Despite R.E.M.’s amicable breakup in 2011, the band members have shown a willingness to participate in events celebrating their legacy, including the tribute shows and a surprise performance at the Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony in June 2024 [Rolling Stone]. Guitarist Peter Buck has expressed that a full-fledged reunion is unlikely, believing the band made the right decision to disband when they did [Rolling Stone].
