Rabies Alert in Hamilton, NY: Stray Cat Tests Positive, One Person Exposed

Hamilton, NY – Officials in Madison County have issued a rabies alert after a stray black cat tested positive for the virus. The cat was found at the Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton on Sunday, October 15, 2023, according to Samantha Field, a spokesperson for the county.

Positive Test and Exposure

The cat was tested on Monday and the positive rabies results were received on Tuesday, Field said.

One person who had contact with the cat is currently receiving treatment for potential rabies exposure. The type of exposure was not disclosed.

Rabies: A Deadly Threat

Rabies is a serious viral disease that can be fatal to humans if medical care is not sought before symptoms appear. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stresses the importance of prompt medical attention for anyone who may have been exposed to rabies.

Public Health Alert

Madison County Public Health is urging anyone who has interacted with a black cat in the area of Seven Oaks Golf Course since October 10, 2023, to contact them immediately at 315-366-2361.
