Historic Triumph: Swiss Women’s Basketball Team Secures Eurobasket 2025 Spot
After an astonishing 69-year hiatus, the Swiss women’s basketball team has qualified for the EuroBasket 2025, etching their names in history. The dramatic qualification came on Sunday, with a decisive victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Aarau, marking a triumphant culmination of a remarkable journey.
The Swiss team’s path to success was far from smooth. The initial stages of the qualifying process were marked by disappointment, with two consecutive defeats prompting the dismissal of their first coach, Hervé Coudray, due to communication issues. However, the arrival of new French coach François Gomez breathed new life into the squad.
Under Gomez’s astute leadership, the team transformed. Led by star players Evita Herminjard and captain Nadia Constantin, they orchestrated an impressive four-game winning streak, securing their place in the continental tournament.
The realization of this goal is deeply significant for Swiss women’s basketball. The last time a Swiss women’s team participated in a major continental tournament was all the way back in 1956.
Nadia Constantin, the team captain, spoke to our program, "5 p.m. Mag Sport," on Monday, reflecting on the team’s journey. “Our road to the final phase has been a test of our resilience,” she shared. “We faced adversity early on, but we never gave up. François Gomez’s arrival was a turning point for us; his strategies and leadership inspired us to reach new heights.”
Constantin emphasized the critical role of captaincy and teamwork, stating "Evita Herminjard and I worked hard to keep the team’s morale high and focused on our shared goal. We understood that individual success was meaningless without team success."
The Swiss women’s basketball team’s qualification for EuroBasket 2025 is a testament to their unwavering determination, effective leadership, and the power of teamwork. Their story serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes across Switzerland and beyond.
