Rafaela Eyes Platinum Glove, Inspired by Bogaerts’ Example

Ceddanne Rafaela, the Boston Red Sox outfielder, is setting his sights on achieving the highest honor for defenders – the Platinum Glove – after already earning his first Gold Glove award in 2025. His journey is fueled by a long-held admiration for former Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts, whom he credits as a key influence on his defensive approach.

A Shared Heritage and Mutual Respect

Rafaela and Bogaerts share a unique connection, originating from their roots in the ABC Islands – Aruba and Curaçao, respectively – off the coast of Venezuela. They represent two of just 23 Major League Baseball players hailing from these islands (Troy Record). While their careers with the Red Sox didn’t overlap, Rafaela consistently looked up to Bogaerts.

Bogaerts’ Influence on Rafaela’s Game

Rafaela has consistently praised Bogaerts’ consistency in making routine plays, a fundamental aspect of strong defensive play. Sporting News reports that Rafaela specifically studied Bogaerts’ approach, along with those of Carlos Correa and Francisco Lindor, to refine his own skills. He admired Bogaerts’ consistent professionalism and positive demeanor, regardless of on-field performance.

From Admiration to Competition

Although Rafaela hoped to be teammates with Bogaerts during the 2023 World Baseball Classic, the opportunity didn’t materialize. Bogaerts had already moved to the San Diego Padres by the time Rafaela was called up to the Red Sox in the summer of 2023, becoming the 17th Curaçaoan player in MLB history (Troy Record). Despite the change, the two players maintain contact and communicate in Papiamento, the language of their home islands.

A Gold Glove and a Platinum Goal

Rafaela’s versatility was highlighted in 2024 when he became the first player since 1901 to play at least 60 games at both shortstop and centerfield in a single season (Wikipedia). This performance earned him his first Gold Glove award in 2025. Now, Rafaela is focused on building upon that success and achieving the ultimate defensive accolade: the Platinum Glove.

“I aim for more,” Rafaela stated. “That’s the goal, to win another (Gold Glove) and then to win the Platinum this year.”

Bogaerts’ Pride

Xander Bogaerts, now with the Padres, continues to follow Rafaela’s career with pride, watching his former team’s highlight reels and appreciating the young player’s impact.
