The Importance of Farmland Preservation
Greenbrier County is actively working to preserve its agricultural land. According to data from the Greenbrier County website, between 2002 and 2007, over 4 million acres of productive farmland were lost to development nationwide. In Greenbrier County specifically, farmland decreased from 228,969 acres in 1972 to 176,995 acres in 2007, representing a loss of 51,974 acres. The number of farms as well decreased from 1,237 in 1972 to 881 in 2007.
