Diontae Johnson Lands in Baltimore: Ravens Acquire Wide Receiver From Panthers

Veteran wide receiver Diontae Johnson is heading to Baltimore. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Johnson has been traded from the Carolina Panthers to the Baltimore Ravens.

Schefter adds that the teams are swapping fifth- and sixth-round picks in this year’s draft. Carolina, meanwhile, will retain a portion of Johnson’s remaining salary, meaning Baltimore will only owe him roughly $625K for the remainder of the season. Schefter adds, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network clarifies , Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.

Johnson’s departure comes as little surprise, as he’d been expected to be traded throughout the season. As Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports notes, Johnson became “discouraged” by his situation. He’s now moving from a 1-7 team to a 5-3 squad with playoff aspirations.

The trade details indicate a tepid market for Johnson’s services. Initially, teams were discussing a Day 2 pick, but that price significantly dropped as it became clear Carolina was eager to move on. CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones adds teams were initially discussing a Day 2 pick in a potential Johnson trade (video link). That price fell considerably, with suitors becoming increasingly aware a parting of ways with Carolina — stemming from what Jones terms as “communication issues” — would be imminent. The Panthers have moved quickly in taking an underwhelming offer.

Why Baltimore?

While Baltimore boasts a potent passing attack, led by quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Ravens’ defense has struggled. Sitting 26th in points allowed per game, Baltimore’s secondary, in particular, has been vulnerable. Addressing this weakness seemed a more logical move than adding to an already strong offense.

Baltimore’s recent first-round draft picks, Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman, along with tight ends Mark Andrews, Isaiah Likely, and Charlie Kolar, contribute significantly to the Ravens’ passing attack. Free agent signing Derrick Henry has lived up to expectations, forming a formidable duo with Lamar Jackson in the running game.

Johnson’s Past Performance

Johnson spent five productive seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers before being traded to Carolina in 2022. Despite Carolina’s struggles, Johnson recorded three games with at least 78 receiving yards, his best performances coming when Andy Dalton was at quarterback.

Johnson’s performance on his new team will be a storyline to watch, especially considering Carolina’s focus on developing rookie quarterback Bryce Young. Will Johnson thrive in Baltimore, helping solidify their defense? Only time will tell.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
