Raygun: The Musical Shut Down Hours Before Premiere Over Legal Threats

A musical inspired by viral Olympic breakdancer Raygun was abruptly shut down hours before its scheduled opening on Saturday. The show’s creator, Australian comedian Steph Broadbridge, revealed on social media that attorneys representing Raygun, also known as Rachael Gunn, issued legal threats, prompting the venue, Kinselas in Sydney, to cancel the performance.

Parody Musical Sparks Legal Battle

“Raygun: The Musical” aimed to satirize Gunn’s performance at the Paris Olympics, which went viral for its unique style and garnered both praise and criticism. The musical aimed to retell her story, incorporating her signature moves, like the kangaroo hop and backward rolls, into a comedic narrative.

Broadbridge, who also intended to star in the production, emphasized her intention to celebrate Gunn and ensure the show wouldn’t harm her brand. However, Gunn’s legal team argued that the musical’s portrayal could mislead audiences into believing Gunn was formally affiliated with the production.

“They were worried I was damaging her brand, which I would never do,” Broadbridge explained in a video posted to Instagram. “They were very concerned that people would think that Rachael Gunn was affiliated with the musical.”

Further fueling the controversy, Broadbridge revealed Gunn’s legal team trademarked the musical’s poster, which featured a silhouette of Gunn’s iconic kangaroo hop. This prevented Broadbridge from performing the dance, claiming Gunn “owns” the move.

“That one did puzzle me – I mean, that’s an Olympic-level dance. How would I possibly be able to do that without any formal breakdancing training?” Broadbridge said.

Cancelled Performance and Apologies

Broadbridge announced refunds for all ticketholders and stated the intended proceeds for the Women’s and Girls Emergency Centre would be donated at a later date. The musical, originally advertised with songs like “You May Be a B-girl But You’ll Always Be an A-girl To Me,” “I’m Breaking Down,” and “I Would Have Won But I Pulled a Muscle,” has been retitled “Breaking: The Musical.”

Gunn’s legal team released a statement explaining the cancellation, emphasizing their commitment to protecting her creative rights and brand.

“While we have immense respect for the credible work and effort that has gone into the development of the show, we must take necessary steps to safeguard Rachael’s creative rights and the integrity of her work,” the statement read.

Following the controversy, Broadbridge publicly apologized to Gunn for any negativity she may have experienced as a result of the musical.

“This was supposed to be me trying to make you feel like the icon I believe that you can be in Australia,” Broadbridge told The Project.
