Rebecca Sugar, the acclaimed musician and animator (known for creating Steven Universe), will return to the School of Visual Arts (SVA) on November 8th to celebrate the release of their album, Lonely Magic. A Homecoming for the Steven Universe Creator
Rebecca Sugar graduated from SVA’s BFA Animation program in 2009. Lonely Magic, released in 2024 [https://rebeccasugar.bandcamp.com/album/lonely-magic], draws inspiration from Sugar’s formative years, including their experiences as a student at SVA. The return to campus represents a full-circle moment, allowing Sugar to reflect on the creative foundations that shaped their artistic journey.
Panel Discussion with SVA Alumni
The event at SVA Theater will include a panel discussion moderated by Hsiang Chin Moe, Chair of the BFA Animation program [https://www.sva.edu/fine-arts/animation/faculty/hsiang-chin-moe]. Joining Sugar on the panel are fellow BFA Animation alumni:
* Chris Burns (2003)
* Ian Jones-Quartey (2006), creator of Craig of the Creek [https://www.cartoonnetwork.com/video/craig-of-the-creek]
* Alex Myung (2009)
The discussion will focus on how their time at SVA influenced their artistic sensibilities and fostered lasting creative partnerships. Jones-Quartey, for exmaple, has spoken about the importance of SVA in developing his storytelling skills [https://www.sva.edu/fine-arts/animation/news/ian-jones-quartey-17a].
