I was looking forward to South of Midnight from Compulsion Games because I was intrigued by the aesthetics and setting of the game. However, after the recent preview version, I was not sure if the new 2018 we will be pleased by the 2018 We Happy Few. The playable demonstration was struggling with some predominantly technical shortcomings. In the end, however, I was very glad that I got the review in my hands, because it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. Despite the fact that the full version is not without a mistake. Yet I had a good time with her.

South of Midnight is a Third Person Action Adventure, but it is easier to describe it as an action platformer where acrobatic passages and fights are regularly alternated. The main character is a young girl named Hazel, who sets out to look for her mother after their house takes great water during the hurricane. The seemingly ordinary world begins to turn into a mixture of Southern legends and modern fairy tales on this journey. It is just the plant and stylization that makes South of Midnight something unique. Most players have fixed since the first trailers that it is the game with Stop Motion animation and significant aesthetics. In fact, the inspiration of the American South and Myths is much deeper.

The novelty has a great scenario and you will meet a number of smaller stories. Their common denominator is pain, loss or some form of injustice. It is not a black and white narrative and distinguish the good of evil is not nearly as simple as it may seem at first glance. The villains often turn out to be the victim and so on. And it is on the main character and the player to help such beings. During your journey, you will find a lot of diverse characters, compete with diverse bosses and visit all kinds of environments that is a pleasure to explore. Enjoy excellent dubbing and you can listen to an excellent soundtrack, which often responds directly to events in the game or tells part of the story.

But it is not a victory of form over content. South of Midnight is also a pleasure to play. The concept is more of a classic action platform. The extremely interesting and beautiful world is divided into chapters, it is not an open world. Some levels offer a little more freedom and the possibility to explore the environment, others are significantly more linear. But there are always a few hidden branches, where the heroine can get the so -called fluff, which serves to improve special abilities. Hazel becomes a so -called weave and begins to control a very special kind of magic that helps her in fights with strange monsters and platforming. The main character gradually learns to run on the walls, sail or attract long distances. If you carefully examine the environment, you can upgrade most of the skills to the end of the game.

Hazel can also look into the memories of people and their souls, understand them and relieve them from their suffering. All sorts of twists and surprises await you. It is not just about foreign pain. There will also be their own family secrets. Although the heroine usually has to rely only on herself, she has a small helper named Kruton. An animated toy can climb places where Hazel does not fit, or for a moment to control one of the enemies, which then fights on your side instead of against you.

Already in the recent preview, I tried to compare the game to something. With an atmosphere and mood reminded me of a mixture of a movie Maze of 1986 and animation Princess and frog. As the mainstream and the emotions go beyond, the Concrete Genie for PS4 from 2019 by Pixelopus studies evoked me. And even after finishing the full version, I don’t feel that this comparison is not appropriate. Actually, however, during the game I thought of a much better price. Although it is a different world, gameplay, playfulness, bizarre characters and a fairy -tale mood, the news is most reminiscent of the American McGee’s Alice and Alice: Madness Returns. There is enough of the darkness here, although of course it is no horror.

Until now, I have mainly praised South of Midnight, but the act is far from perfect. I was particularly frozen that the game continues to accompany some technical errors that I encountered in the preview version. Framerate on Xbox Series X no longer springs so often, the game is trying to hold 60 fps, but I continued to come across situations where the game was breathing, including cutscene. By the way, who would mind stop motion effect in gameplay, you can turn it off, but remains in animations. But he might not disturb me. In the acrobatic passages, I think, in my opinion, some inexperience of the authors with the genre of platforms. The control still seemed to me to be stiff and not as accurate as you would expect in such a game. You get used to, but you will have to concentrate more on jumping because of some inertia.

A separate chapter is localization or subtitles. I appreciate that the game has an official Czech translation, and I would say that quite stylish. The characters speak in a specific way and the story will open up to a wider audience. Although something apparently changed in this matter during the review, I still unfortunately still encountered numerous shortcomings. The problem is the readability of the subtitles unless you show the ugly black background. But subtitles also have trouble with timing, lines or sentences. Often at the end of the sentence is missing a single word and rebounds after a longer pause with another sentence. Occasionally, a sentence in English suddenly jumped into translation. Overall, it seemed to me as if the headlines were implemented by someone who never played with them and did not know what they normally look like.

I would like the authors that the game later appeared on other platforms beyond PC and Xbox to reach other potential players.

It is not that in the game everything works perfectly except for the technical things. But I have no great reason to complain about others. They didn’t spoil my experience, I just enjoyed the South of Midnight. But yes, at least it is worth mentioning that a kind of running moment is repeated in every level and then the gameplay will not enrich. And not everyone will think that the vast majority of fights are situated in isolated arenas, so the action is not a natural part of the environment. But it has some logic from the perspective of the local world.

In the end, I think you get in some 10 hours and I really enjoyed this trip to the myths surrounded by the American south. But you should know that I feel exactly the target customer. I am a player who liked the mentioned Alice: Madness Returns and I was willing to forgive some mistakes. South of Midnight has in common with her that it is not quite a mainstream action adventure, but comes from a large publisher. That is why I would like the authors to later appear on other platforms beyond PC and Xbox so that it can reach other potential players.
