Periodontal diseases, those that affect the tissues that surround and support the teeth, have become one of the main reasons people visit dental offices in the State. These conditions, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are highly prevalent among adults, and often progress silently, leading to tooth loss.

Omar Alejandro morales, head of the Dental Prosthesis Program for the Ministry of Health in the State, explained that these diseases, while preventable, frequently reappear in public health services due to insufficient oral hygiene and a lack of preventative care.According to the specialist, many patients seek consultation only after experiencing notable discomfort, or even tooth loss.

“Periodontal diseases generally begin with inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis. This stage is reversible with timely treatment. However, without proper care, the disease can progress to periodontitis, which damages deep tissues, the alveolar bone, and ultimately, results in tooth loss,” Morales explained.

A key factor in the progress of these diseases is a lack of regular dental cleanings. Morales recommends that people visit the dentist at least every six months for a prophylaxis (dental cleaning) to remove bacterial plaque and tartar buildup – the primary causes of gum inflammation.

“Many people believe that if they aren’t experiencing pain, they don’t have dental problems.”
