Crimson Desert: Balancing Hype and Expectations for Pearl Abyss’s New Open-World RPG
After years in development, Pearl Abyss’s highly anticipated open-world action-adventure RPG, Crimson Desert, is set to release on consoles and PC in the coming weeks. The studio is navigating a delicate balance between generating excitement and avoiding the pitfalls of over-promising, particularly in light of past game launches that failed to meet player expectations.
A Long Development Journey
The development of Crimson Desert has been a lengthy process, spanning over six and a half years. Originally announced as a prequel to their massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Black Desert Online, the project underwent significant changes, including a complete engine rebuild IGN. Will Powers, Director of Marketing and PR for Pearl Abyss, acknowledged that announcing the game too early was a misstep, but believes the extended development period has fostered a sense of mystery and anticipation.
Addressing Console Performance Concerns
A primary concern among potential players revolves around the game’s performance on consoles, particularly the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Much of the publicly available footage has been captured on PC, leading to worries about a potential repeat of the troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077 Push Square. Pearl Abyss has confirmed the game will feature enhancements for the PlayStation 5 Pro and released a single trailer showcasing PS5 Pro footage.
Powers responded to these concerns, stating that the studio is not “hiding anything” and is frustrated with repeatedly having to address the issue. He urged players to allow the team to finalize the game and promised to reveal more information before launch to provide ample time for pre-orders Push Square.
Evolving Beyond Black Desert Online
The decision to move away from a direct connection to Black Desert Online was a pivotal moment in Crimson Desert’s development. Powers explained that the team chose to embrace the changes the game underwent rather than forcing it to conform to its original design IGN. Whereas the two games will share stylistic and combat DNA as part of the “Desert IP”, Crimson Desert aims to establish its own identity.
Genre Definition: Action-Adventure Over RPG
Crimson Desert is officially categorized as an “open-world action-adventure” game, rather than a traditional RPG. This distinction was intentional, as Pearl Abyss already has a successful RPG in Black Desert Online and wanted to avoid creating confusion about the new game’s mechanics and focus IGN. The game emphasizes combat, exploration, and storytelling.
Drawing Inspiration, Forging a Unique Identity
Crimson Desert draws inspiration from several acclaimed open-world games, including The Legend of Zelda, The Witcher 3, Dragon’s Dogma, and Assassin’s Creed IGN. However, Powers believes the game has evolved beyond simple comparisons, offering a unique combination of systems and experiences. He hopes Crimson Desert will ultimately define its own genre.
A World Designed for Both Short and Long Play Sessions
Pearl Abyss has designed Crimson Desert to be accessible to players with varying amounts of time. The game offers engaging activities that can be completed in short bursts, as well as opportunities for extended exploration and progression IGN.
The Importance of Enjoyment and Community
A core guiding principle for the developers is to create a world centered around enjoyment. Powers highlighted the potential for a “communal experience,” where players can share their discoveries and experiences with friends, similar to the feeling of playing a single-player game with a party chat IGN.
