Steve Ballantine: A Theatre Icon in Sault Ste. Marie

While most aspiring artists head to bustling metropolises like Toronto, Steve Ballantine took a unique path. This talented actor, director, and arts advocate moved to Sault Ste. Marie in 1988, bringing his extensive experience and passion for theatre to this northern Ontario city.

More Than Just an Actor

Born in 1952 near Toronto, Ballantine’s early career took him across Canada, Europe, and the United States. He honed his skills at prestigious institutions like the University of Windsor, the Banff School of Fine Arts, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, and the Tukak Theatre in Denmark. In 2000, he earned a Master’s in Applied Theatre from the University of Manchester, solidifying his expertise in the field.

Ballantine first stepped foot in Sault Ste. Marie in 1986 as a guest director for Stage North and the Sault Opera Society. He was smitten by the region’s natural beauty and quickly decided to make it his home.

A Dedicated Theatre Champion

Upon arriving in 1988, Ballantine served as the general manager and artistic director of Sault Summer Youth Theatre, establishing a training program for young actors that toured communities throughout northern Ontario. He also collaborated with other theatre groups, including Algoma University Theatre, on productions like “Eurydice”.

Ballantine’s commitment to the arts extended beyond directing. He actively served on the Boards of Directors for the Arts Council of Sault Ste. Marie, the Rapids community planning process, the Cultural Advisory Board, and the Community Theatre Centre Management Board. In 1992, he founded Soothfest, a high school-level theatre competition, further nurturing the next generation of actors.

A Lasting Legacy

Steve Ballantine’s belief that impactful theatre can originate anywhere with dedication shaped the Sault Ste. Marie arts scene. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 55, leaving behind a legacy of artistic excellence and community enrichment.
