The award acknowledges her efforts to lower prescription drug costs, protect Medicare access, streamline prior authorization processes, strengthen cancer treatment and ensure continuous Medicaid coverage for patients.

A Career Dedicated to Service

Dr. Miller-Meeks’ commitment to service began with a personal experience – severe burns sustained in a kitchen fire as a teenager. Inspired by the physical therapist who aided her recovery, she pursued a career in medicine to help others.1

Prior to her congressional career, Dr. Miller-Meeks served 24 years in the U.S. Army, enlisting at age 18 and rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring from the Army Reserve in 2000. She worked as a private, nurse, and physician during her military service.1

Before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2021, she served in the Iowa State Senate and as director of the Iowa Department of Public Health from 2010 to 2014.1 Currently, she serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, including the Health Subcommittee, and chairs the Health Subcommittee on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

Aizuss, MD.1 “Her firsthand experience in medicine and public service gives her a deep understanding of the real-world challenges patients and physicians face every day.”

Dr. Miller-Meeks expressed her gratitude for the award, stating, “As a physician, Army veteran, and Member of Congress, my mission has always been to put patients first.”2 She pledged to continue advocating for affordable, high-quality healthcare for all Iowans.
