‘Restaurant Misverstand’ Returns with New Season in Diksmuide, Belgium

The VRT program Restaurant Misverstand (Restaurant Misunderstanding) is set to open its doors for a new season in Diksmuide, Belgium, on March 3rd. The unique restaurant employs individuals living with early-onset dementia, offering them a supportive work environment and a platform to demonstrate their continued abilities.

A New Location and Familiar Faces

This season, Restaurant Misverstand has relocated to a renovated farmhouse on the rural estate of farmer Olivier in the Westhoek region. The idyllic setting provides a peaceful backdrop for the program’s heartwarming mission. Dieter Coppens will once again guide eight individuals – Eva, Danny, Christine, Patrick, Sigrid, Lode, Christel, and Johan – through the experience.

Introducing Stephanie Planckaert

Joining Dieter Coppens this season is Stephanie Planckaert, who will assist in the guidance and support of the restaurant’s employees. Planckaert brings experience in both the hospitality industry and a personal understanding of dementia, as her mother-in-law lives with the condition. VRT News reports that Planckaert is accustomed to outdoor life and has relevant hospitality experience.

Beyond the Restaurant: Connecting with the Community

The new season will also feature Dieter and Stephanie accompanying the employees to explore their personal worlds, fostering deeper understanding and connection. The program aims to openly share the experiences, stories, and challenges faced by those living with dementia and their families.

A Shared Living Experience

Employees will continue to live together in a holiday home near the IJzer river after work, creating a space for camaraderie, support, and friendship. This shared living arrangement allows them to build strong bonds and learn from one another as they navigate their journeys with dementia.

Remembering Lode

The upcoming season is dedicated to Lode, one of the eight participants, who chose euthanasia after filming concluded, following a diagnosis of rapidly progressing Alzheimer’s disease. Focus & WTV reports that Lode openly discussed his decision during filming.

Culinary Leadership

Chef Seppe Nobels and his sous chef, Lien, will lead the kitchen team, ensuring a high-quality dining experience. Anouck de Bruijn from the Expertise Center for Dementia Flanders will also provide professional support throughout the season.
