Ric Grenell Steps Down as Kennedy Center President, Matt Floca to Take Helm
Ric Grenell is leaving his post as president of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, marking the end of a period of significant change and controversy at the Washington, D.C. Institution. President Donald Trump announced Grenell’s departure on Friday, praising his work during the center’s transition according to the Associated Press.
Latest Leadership Announced
Matt Floca, currently the Kennedy Center’s vice president of facilities operations, will succeed Grenell as CEO and executive director, pending approval from the Kennedy Center’s board of directors as reported by CBS News. Trump stated that Floca has helped achieve “tremendous progress” in bringing the Center to a “highest level of Excellence!”
A Tumultuous Tenure
Grenell’s appointment in February 2025, following Trump’s removal of several board members and his own assumption of the chairmanship, initiated a sweeping restructuring of the Kennedy Center. This overhaul aimed to shift programming away from what Trump characterized as “woke” content, favoring more classical, “patriotic,” and “family friendly” performances NBC News detailed. The Kennedy Center Honors were also reimagined to feature figures selected by the president.
Renovations and Rebranding
The Kennedy Center is slated to close this summer for approximately two years of renovations, a project Trump estimates will cost around $200 million, below the $250 million previously approved by Congress USA Today reported. During his tenure, the board, handpicked by Trump, voted to rename the venue to include the president’s name.
Artistic Community Response
The changes implemented under Grenell’s leadership were met with resistance from the artistic community, resulting in resignations from high-level staff and cancellations from prominent artists, including Philip Glass, Stephen Schwartz, Renée Fleming, Béla Fleck, and Rhiannon Giddens as noted by the Associated Press.
