Roberto Cipresso: A Terroir Alchemist Bridging Continents Through Wine

On Thursday, February 19, 2026, a unique wine tasting experience in Vicenza, Italy, transported attendees across four continents and six wine-growing latitudes. Led by renowned winemaker and strategic consultant Roberto Cipresso, the event showcased a philosophy centered on the concept of “Terroir” – the complete natural environment in which a wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate.

From Montalcino to the World

Roberto Cipresso’s winemaking journey began in Montalcino, Italy, in 1987, where he collaborated with esteemed Brunello producers, including the late Gianfranco Soldera of Case Basse. However, his talent and vision extended far beyond a single region or grape variety. He has since left his mark on wine regions across the globe, including Argentina, Armenia, France, Spain (Mallorca), and California.

A Philosophy of Listening to the Land

Cipresso’s approach prioritizes listening to the “Terroir” rather than imposing a specific winemaking style. This philosophy aligns with the European wine CMO directive (Common Organization of the Wine Market), which he anticipated in its concept. He seeks a dialogue with the earth, pursuing authenticity over technical perfection. His mission remains consistent: to translate the soul of a place into wines of extraordinary elegance.

Precision and the Power of Soil

Cipresso is known for his precise use of barrique (oak barrels) to achieve repeatable results, codifying protocols that can be managed by collaborators. He also emphasizes the importance of soil age, noting that older soils – such as those in the pre-Andean mountain range, estimated to be 400,000 years old – make minerals more electromagnetically available to vine roots.

A Journey Through the Glass

The tasting event featured wines from diverse regions, each representing a unique expression of Terroir:

  • Prensal Blanc – Mallorca, Spain: Exhibiting Mediterranean influences reminiscent of Ischia, and Ansonica.
  • Pinot Noir – California, USA: Showcasing the technical precision and fruit-forward character of New World Pinot Noir.
  • Pommard – Burgundy, France: Representing the austere elegance and complexity of European Pinot Noir.
  • Areni – Vayots Dzor, Armenia: A return to the origins of wine, with a millenary history and notes of black cherry.
  • Brunello di Montalcino – Tuscany, Italy: A benchmark of Italian winemaking, known for its nobility, depth, and connection to the land.
  • Pachamama – Valle de Uco, Argentina: Highlighting the high-altitude energy and indomitable character of Malbec.

The event was a success, thanks to the curiosity and enthusiasm of attendees, and the dedication of organizer Francesco Salano.
