In December 2023, Melissa Hoskins, also an Olympic cyclist, was fatally struck by a car driven by her husband, Rohan Dennis, near their home in Medindie, Adelaide. Dennis pleaded guilty to committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm but was not held criminally responsible for her death. In May 2025, he received a 17-month suspended sentence and was disqualified from driving for five years.

The Controversial Instagram Post

Dennis had not posted on Instagram since shortly before the crash. He returned to the platform on Tuesday with a photo of a bike frame, followed on Wednesday evening by the image of the black Porsche with the controversial caption. He also posted a second image of his children with a similar caption, referring to them as “Two absolute weapons.”

South Australia’s commissioner for victims’ rights, Sarah Quick, condemned the post as “deeply offensive,” stating it demonstrated “a clear lack of insight into the real and lasting impact of the harm he has caused.” Quick added that the post reflected “a profound lack of respect for Melissa and her family,” who continue to grieve her loss.
