Ron Howard and his wife Cheryl Howard are definitely the fun grandparents.

The actor-turned-director, 71, spoke with PEOPLE at the YES Scholars 25th Anniversary Gala on Thursday, Sept. 4,at a private event in Los Angeles,Calif., where he shared that he and his wife have become very doting grandparents.

“My wife Cheryl, who was always kind of a tough mom, kind of a disciplinarian, has entirely changed,” Howard told PEOPLE.”rules do not apply at our house when it comes to the grandkids.”

He continued, “We’re spoiling them rotten, and we’re loving every minute of it.”

Howard and Cheryl share four children: daughter Bryce Dallas Howard, and twins Jocelyn Carlyle and Paige Carlyle, and son Reed Cross. Bryce Dallas has two children, Theodore and beatrice, making Ron and Cheryl grandparents to those two.

The Apollo 13 director said that he and Cheryl are “very aware” of how quickly time passes with grandchildren. “You just want to soak it all up,” he explained.
