Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE Celebrates 40 Years with Homecoming Season at The Joyce Theater
This month marks a significant milestone for Ronald K. Brown and his dance company, EVIDENCE, A Dance Company, as they celebrate their 40th anniversary with a homecoming season at New York City’s Joyce Theater from February 24 to March 1, 2026. The season will showcase Brown’s influential choreographic style, a fusion of Western contemporary dance with African diasporic traditions, and honor the contributions of key collaborators.
A Full-Circle Journey
Ronald K. Brown, a Brooklyn native, founded EVIDENCE in 1985 with a vision to represent real people – families, teachers, and ancestors – on stage. His journey began with a school trip to see the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, inspiring him to pursue dance. He received early training at the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza in Brooklyn. Over the years, Brown has choreographed seven works for Ailey and established a long-term residency for EVIDENCE at the Billie Holiday Theatre at Restoration.
Honoring Collaboration and Legacy
The 40th-anniversary celebration is not just about longevity but as well about recognizing the individuals who have shaped Brown’s work. The first program will celebrate costume designer and musician Wunmi Olaiya, with whom Brown has collaborated since the early 1990s. Olaiya will perform live during the closing work of the program, Upside Down. The second program is dedicated to the memory of renowned dance artist Toni Pierce-Sands, who passed away in November 2025, and will feature Where the Light Shines Through, created for Pierce-Sands’ TU Dance in 2017, and Clear as Tearwater, a solo piece also made for Pierce-Sands.
A Career Spanning Four Decades
Throughout his career, Brown has received numerous accolades, including the 2020 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award, the AUDELCO Award for his choreography in Regina Taylor’s Crowns, two Black Theater Alliance Awards, and a Fred & Adele Astaire Award (now the Chita Rivera Awards) for his work on the Broadway production of The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. He was also named Def Dance Jam Workshop 2000 Mentor of the Year and has received the Doris Duke Artist Award, the New York City Center Fellowship, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2024, he was awarded the Martha Hill Mid-Career Achievement Award and the Dance Teacher Award of Distinction, shared with his associate artistic director, Arcell Cabuag.
Bringing Works to Life with EVIDENCE
Many of the pieces featured in the anniversary programs were originally created for other companies, including Ailey, Philadanco, TU Dance, and Cleo Parker Robinson Dance. Brown expressed his excitement about bringing these works “in-house,” allowing the EVIDENCE dancers to deeply embody the material. He praised the talent and generosity of his dancers, noting their commitment to the work.
Adapting and Evolving
Brown described a collaborative process when revisiting existing pieces with new dancers, often tweaking the choreography in response to the performers. He emphasized the importance of staying true to his artistic intentions, a lesson learned from his composition mentor, Bessie Schonberg. He noted that the programs will showcase works from 1999 and 2017, reflecting the evolution of his artistic vision.
Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead
Brown shared his experience recovering from a stroke five years ago, emphasizing the support of his family and Arcell Cabuag in regaining his ability to walk and dance. He acknowledged that his process in the studio has shifted, relying more on Cabuag to physicalize ideas. Looking forward, Brown hopes to expand EVIDENCE’s reach internationally, with aspirations to travel to Cuba, West Africa, and South Africa, and to establish a permanent home for the company.
A Legacy of Inspiration
Brown finds inspiration in the power of dance to bring hope and joy, and is currently developing a third piece, Faith, to complete a trilogy that began with Grace (1999) and Mercy (2019). He sees his legacy in the young people he encounters through the Youth Arts Academy and in the dancers whose lives he has touched.
