A New Academic Foothold in Zacatecas

The Universidad Nacional Rosario Castellanos (UNRC) is planting its flag in Zacatecas. Construction has officially broken ground on a new campus situated near the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas (UAZ) Siglo XXI facility. While the physical site takes shape, the university is moving quickly to launch its academic operations, starting with 12 online degree programs before shifting to in-person instruction for the 2027-2028 academic cycle.

The expansion is backed by a 102.5 millones de pesos investment drawn from the Fondo de Aportaciones Múltiples. Rector Alma Xóchitl Herrera Márquez has confirmed that the project timeline is calibrated to welcome students by August 2027. Financial planning is aggressive: the budget is slated for full commitment by December, with construction crews mandated to complete the facility no later than March 2026.

Launching with 500 Students

Demand is already visible. Approximately 500 students are registered for the upcoming cycle, with online classes scheduled to commence this September. To ensure local youth do not miss out, the university has extended its enrollment period through August, providing a buffer for students still awaiting admission results from other institutions.

A Diverse Curriculum

The university arrives in Zacatecas with a broad academic catalog. The current offerings include:

A Diverse Curriculum
  • Data Science
  • Accounting and Finance
  • Law and Criminology
  • Law and Citizen Security
  • Community Development
  • Humanities and Multimedia Narrative
  • International Relations
  • Urbanism
  • Economics and Sustainable Development
  • Philosophy and History

Scaling a National Footprint

Founded seven years ago in Mexico City, the UNRC has built its reputation on tuition-free higher education. The institution now serves 94 mil 260 students across its network. Beyond its 11 existing academic units in Mexico City, the university has already branched into nine states, with an ambitious roadmap to enter 14 additional states this year. Its distance learning platform currently reaches students in many municipalities across the country.

Prioritizing Regional Talent

Staffing the new Zacatecas location remains a priority. Rector Herrera Márquez confirmed the institution will focus on hiring local professionals, noting that most candidates in the region hold postgraduate qualifications. This recruitment strategy aims to balance the university’s rigorous instructional standards with a commitment to regional relevance.
