Philippines Landfill Collapse: One Dead, Dozens Missing

January 10, 2026 – A massive garbage slide at a landfill in the central Philippines has left one person dead and 34 others missing as of today. The collapse occurred on Thursday, burying nearly 50 sanitation workers who were inside structures belonging to the company thay worked for.

authorities believe there is still a chance of finding survivors. “There should still be signs of life,” a local mayor stated during a press conference, indicating ongoing rescue efforts.

The landfill processes approximately 1,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily. The incident has sparked renewed criticism regarding the safety of this waste disposal method.

This tragedy echoes a similar landslide in Manila in 2000,which resulted in the deaths of over 200 people. That event also raised concerns about the dangers of accumulating large volumes of waste without proper safety measures. The current situation is prompting calls for a review of landfill safety standards across the Philippines.
