Two Decades of Sports Media Expertise

Nolan arrives at the RFL from the Science in Sport Group, where he most recently served as chief marketing officer. His career spans more than 20 years across the sports media and technology sectors.

His resume is defined by high-profile digital roles. He served as director of Yahoo Sports from 2008 to 2016 and held the position of head of digital at the Motorsport Network between 2017 and 2018. Before those roles, he spent seven years at Manchester United, where he oversaw the club’s global media network during a period marked by record reach, engagement, and revenues.

Stabilizing the Governing Body

The leadership change follows the departure of Tony Sutton, who stepped down in September 2025 after a three-year term. The governing body has operated under interim leadership since his exit.

Abi Ekoku initially managed the RFL before moving to a role with St Helens. Rhodri Jones, the managing director of RL Commercial, subsequently took over the interim responsibilities. Jones will continue to hold the position until Nolan begins his tenure on October 1.

Modernizing the Commercial Approach

RFL chair Nigel Wood, who has overseen the RL Commercial arm since his appointment in June 2025, framed the move as a foundational step in a “bold and ambitious” strategy to bolster the sport’s financial standing.

The RFL intends to leverage Nolan’s expertise in digital and social media platforms to accelerate growth and increase revenues. These financial targets have been a primary focus for the organization following recent years of adjustment.

“Ian’s skillset and vast experience in the global, digital market, including an influential seven years at Manchester United, will complement what we already have within the RFL,” Wood said in a statement.
