The Rise of Rural Indian Gyms: Fitness, Freedom, and a Backlash

Gyms are rapidly becoming central hubs in small-town and rural India, offering young people spaces for socializing, fitness, and a taste of urban lifestyles. This burgeoning gym culture, however, is similarly attracting scrutiny and, in some cases, backlash, raising questions about social change and evolving gender dynamics.

A New Social Space

Traditionally, temples served as communal spaces in rural India where individuals could gather outside the oversight of elders. Now, gyms are increasingly filling that role. As Santosh Desai, author of Memes For Mummyji: Making Sense of Post-Smartphone India, notes, “Gyms are now the new temples of rural India. In temples, they worshipped the deity, here they worship the body.” [1]

These gyms are popping up in diverse locations – near farms, in low-income neighborhoods, and even within homes – driven by a relatively low investment cost and consistent demand. They provide a unique environment where young men and women can interact more freely than traditionally allowed, offering a degree of social freedom previously unavailable. For women, gyms offer a socially acceptable reason to step away from restrictive daily routines.

The Business of Fitness

Gym ownership is often concentrated within dominant agrarian communities, such as Jats and Gujjars, or families with substantial land holdings. Many gym owners act as trainers themselves, supplemented by online resources like YouTube videos. The growth in the fitness sector has been particularly noticeable in the last two to three years, especially in states like Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. [1]

India currently has approximately 46,500 commercial fitness facilities, and this number is projected to reach 65,500 by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate of around 6%. [1] This growth is fueled by increasing demand in both urban and rural areas, alongside a growing market for fitness supplements and protein powders.

A Growing Backlash: “Gym Jihad”

The rise of gym culture hasn’t been without controversy. In January 2026, Uttar Pradesh Police claimed to have uncovered a religious conversion racket operating from five gyms in Mirzapur, leading to the arrest of several Muslim gym owners and trainers. [1] This incident, coupled with protests led by Hindu groups against a gym trainer in Dehradun accused of inappropriate behavior, has led to the coining of the term “gym jihad.”

In response, the Uttar Pradesh government has directed officials to inspect all gyms and ensure they employ female trainers. [1] Gym owners are facing challenges in complying with this directive due to a shortage of qualified female trainers, with some resorting to having female family members pose as trainers during inspections.

Navigating Social Constraints

For many women, joining a gym represents a significant step towards greater freedom and self-expression. However, they often face challenges such as unwanted attention, harassment, and judgment from neighbors. Stories circulate of women who met partners at gyms and married outside their caste or religion, adding to societal anxieties. [1]

In some cases, family pressure and societal expectations influence a woman’s decision to join a gym. One woman in Baghpat was encouraged to start working out after being rejected by three prospective grooms due to her weight, with her mother accompanying her to ensure her safety. [1]

Masculinity, Supplements, and the Future of Rural Fitness

Gyms also play a role in shaping ideas of masculinity, providing spaces for young men to display their physical strength and aspirations, both in person and on social media. The demand for fitness supplements is also growing, but concerns exist regarding the prevalence of counterfeit products. [1]

As gyms continue to proliferate in rural India, they are becoming more than just places to work out; they are evolving into social hubs that reflect changing attitudes, aspirations, and the ongoing negotiation between tradition and modernity.
