Russell Dominates Australian Grand Prix Qualifying as Antonelli Faces Investigation
George Russell of Mercedes secured a commanding pole position for the Australian Grand Prix, outpacing teammate Kimi Antonelli by 0.293 seconds in a dominant qualifying session at Melbourne’s Albert Park. Isack Hadjar of Red Bull qualified third, but trailed Russell by nearly eight tenths of a second, highlighting Mercedes’ impressive pace.
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari secured fourth place, followed closely by McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in fifth. Lando Norris will start from sixth on the grid, while Lewis Hamilton, in the other Ferrari, qualified in seventh, a tenth and a half behind Leclerc. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen will start at the back of the grid after a dramatic crash during qualifying.
Antonelli Under Scrutiny After Qualifying
Kimi Antonelli, who crashed during final practice earlier on Saturday, is facing a stewards’ investigation for an unsafe release during Q3. Two cooling fans detached from his Mercedes and ended up on the track, one in the gravel at the opening corner and the other on the racing line, requiring McLaren to produce repairs to Lando Norris’ front wing with duct tape.
Mercedes’ Dominance Confirmed
Mercedes had been anticipated to lead the way following significant regulation changes, and their performance in qualifying confirmed their advantage. Toto Wolff, the Mercedes boss, was visibly pleased with the team’s performance.
Verstappen’s Qualifying Disappointment
Max Verstappen’s qualifying session ended abruptly with a crash on his first lap. He lost control under braking at the first corner, hitting the barrier. Verstappen expressed his frustration over the radio, stating, “The car just f—ing locked on the rear axles. Fantastic.” He has been critical of the recent regulations, and his early exit is unlikely to change his opinion.
Further Down the Grid
Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin will start in 17th position, ahead of only the Cadillac drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas. Lance Stroll failed to set a time during qualifying.
