George Russell Dominates Australian Grand Prix, Securing First Win of 2026 Season
Melbourne – George Russell of Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team kicked off the 2026 Formula 1 season with a commanding victory at the Australian Grand Prix. The British driver finished ahead of his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in a thrilling race at Melbourne Circuit on Sunday, March 8th.
Race Highlights
The race began with drama as Oscar Piastri of McLaren was unable to participate after a crash during the reconnaissance lap. Nico Hulkenberg as well faced a setback, failing to start due to car issues during the installation lap.
Charles Leclerc, starting from fourth on the grid, made a strong start, taking the lead on the first lap. Russell, who secured pole position, dropped to second, followed by Lewis Hamilton, who climbed to third from seventh on the grid.
Russell regained the lead on the second lap, but Leclerc responded on the next lap. The two drivers continued to exchange positions for several laps, creating an exciting battle at the front of the pack. Russell ultimately took the lead on lap eight, only to be overtaken again on the same lap.
A virtual safety car (VSC) was deployed on the 11th lap after Isack Hadjar’s car began emitting smoke, forcing his retirement. Russell pitted during the VSC period, promoting the Ferrari duo to the top two positions.
Leclerc made his pit stop on the 25th lap, handing the lead to Hamilton. Russell and Antonelli followed closely behind. Russell overtook Hamilton on the 28th lap, with Antonelli taking second position as Leclerc rejoined the race in third. Hamilton settled into fourth.
This order remained unchanged until the finish, marking Russell’s first win of the season and his sixth career victory since joining Mercedes in 2022.
