Russia Doubles Down on Territorial Demands, Rejects Truce

Russia won’t concede any territory in Ukraine, according to deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov. moscow insists on retaining control over five Ukrainian regions: Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson.

This stance is especially stark considering russia doesn’t fully control any of these regions. While it holds Crimea and most of Luhansk, its forces don’t control the regional capitals in Zaporizhzhia or Kherson. Control is fragmented, and the claim of dominance is inaccurate.

As European leaders pledge continued support for Ukraine, including military aid,the Kremlin is now demanding security guarantees for Russia itself. This demand comes despite Russia initiating the conflict.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated Russia won’t accept peace agreements if Kyiv is perceived to sabotage them. This accusation is baseless, as Ukraine has not acted aggressively toward Russia. Peskov also falsely claimed a NATO representative infiltrated the Ukrainian government and “triggered” the war. This is demonstrably false; NATO representatives aren’t part of Ukrainian institutions and weren’t present before or during the invasion.

The Kremlin also dismissed the possibility of a Christmas truce.German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested a pause in attacks during the holidays to perhaps open negotiations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr zelenskyy expressed support for a ceasefire, even extending to strikes on energy infrastructure.

However, Peskov rejected the idea outright. He stated Russia doesn’t want a truce to allow Ukraine to regroup and continue fighting.”We want to stop this war, achieve our goals, secure our interests,” he said.
