While negotiations are slipping and the conflict is about to enter its fifth year, the Kremlin announced this Friday, February 13 that new negotiations with Ukraine will take place in Geneva, Switzerland on February 17 and 18.
New negotiations with Ukraine will take place in Geneva, Switzerland on February 17 and 18, the Kremlin declared this Friday, February 13, as the conflict between the two countries soon enters its fifth year.
“The next round of negotiations (…) will take place on February 17 and 18 in Geneva, also in a tripartite format between Russia, the United States and Ukraine,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told the Ria Novosti agency, specifying that negotiator Vladimir Medinski will lead the Russian delegation.
On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the United States had offered to organize next week, in Miami, a third round of direct talks between kyiv and Moscow, after two meetings this year in Abu Dhabi. According to the Ukrainian president, kyiv “immediately” accepted this meeting in Florida. “It is not important for us if the meeting takes place in Miami or Abu Dhabi. The main thing is that there are results,” he continued.
Deadly Russian bombings
Russians, Ukrainians and Americans have held two rounds of negotiations in Abu Dhabi in recent weeks on a cessation of hostilities, while the deadly Russian bombings continue, devastating the Ukrainian energy network. Six people, including three young brothers, were killed in nighttime Russian attacks on eastern and southern Ukraine, emergency services and local authorities said Friday.
Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that the United States wanted an end to the conflict, the deadliest in Europe since the Second World War, “by the beginning of summer, in June”.
Russia, which launched a large-scale offensive against Ukraine in February 2022, occupies around 20% of its territory and is pushing for full control of the eastern Donetsk region, saying it would take it by force if negotiations fail.
