Ukraine War Enters Fourth Year Amidst Intensified Attacks and Stalled Peace Talks
As the four-year mark of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine approaches, the conflict shows no signs of abating. A recent surge in Russian missile and drone attacks, coupled with stalled peace negotiations and escalating tensions with neighboring countries, underscores the challenges facing Ukraine as it seeks to defend its sovereignty.
Recent Escalation in Attacks
On Sunday, February 18, 2026, Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine, deploying 297 drones and nearly 50 missiles, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. While a “significant proportion” of these were intercepted, the attacks caused widespread damage, including the destruction of a residential house in Kyiv and damage to energy, logistics, and water supply infrastructure. The attacks resulted in one death and wounded a dozen, including four children. The Guardian reports that Russia continues to prioritize strikes over diplomatic solutions.
Stalled Peace Negotiations
U.S.-mediated peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, held in Geneva last week, yielded limited progress. Ukraine insists on maintaining its sovereignty and internationally recognized borders, while Russia demands the cession of occupied territory in eastern Ukraine. CBS News reports that Zelenskyy accused Moscow of playing for time, and the talks concluded after only two hours on the second day.
Despite calls from former President Trump for Ukraine to reach a deal, potentially involving territorial concessions, Zelenskyy and NATO allies remain firm in their opposition to such a move, fearing it would reward Russian aggression.
Regional Tensions Rise
The conflict is also exacerbating tensions with Ukraine’s neighbors. Slovakia and Hungary are demanding the resumption of Russian oil deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline, which was reportedly damaged in a Russian drone attack in January. AP News details that both countries are threatening to withhold support for new EU sanctions against Russia unless their demands are met.
Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico has accused Zelenskyy of “behaving maliciously,” while Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that Hungary will not approve decisions important to Ukraine until oil shipments resume.
Lviv Terrorist Incident
A terrorist incident in Lviv resulted in the death of a police officer and injuries to 25 others. A bomb detonated after police responded to a reported break-in at a store, followed by a second blast targeting emergency responders. Ukrainian authorities believe the attack was ordered by Russia.
The State of the Conflict
Despite four years of war, Russia has not achieved its initial objectives, including the removal of Zelenskyy’s government. Russia currently occupies approximately a fifth of Ukrainian territory and continues to make incremental gains, particularly in the east. Ukraine, however, maintains it is not losing the war, having recently reclaimed approximately 116 square miles of territory in the Zaporizhzhia oblast.
International Calls for Peace
Pope Leo XIV has issued a plea for peace in Ukraine, emphasizing the “urgent necessity” of a ceasefire and renewed dialogue.
As the conflict enters its fifth year, the path to a lasting resolution remains uncertain, with both sides entrenched in their positions and international efforts to mediate a ceasefire facing significant obstacles.
