India’s Outbound Travel Boom: Visa Ease Fuels International Wanderlust

India’s travel industry is experiencing an unprecedented surge in outbound tourism, driven by a burgeoning middle class and the rise of tier 2 and tier 3 cities. According to a report by Atlys, cities like Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai are leading the charge, with travelers seeking authentic, budget-friendly international experiences.

Despite concerns regarding the Indian rupee hitting an all-time low and the Indian passport ranking lower globally, outbound travel numbers are soaring. Travelport projects that by 2028, India’s outbound international travel will reach 39 million passengers, marking a remarkable 8% compound annual growth rate from 2023.

"In 2023, India saw 2.6 billion domestic trips, generating around $105 billion in travel spend. Outbound travel exceeded pre-COVID levels, reaching 27 million passengers with a total travel value of $40 billion," shared Mark Meehan, Travelport’s GVP & Global Managing Director.

This growth is further fueled by several countries now offering Indians visas on arrival and simplifying the visa process. Here’s a look at the latest destinations making travel easier for Indian tourists:

Holiday in Indonesia with e-Visa on Arrival

Indonesia has introduced its new e-Visa on Arrival (e-VoA) program, allowing Indians and travelers from 96 other countries to apply for visas online before departure. This initiative supports Indonesia’s goal of welcoming 14 million tourists by 2025. The standard e-VoA fee is ₹2,646, with an additional VFS Global Service Fee of ₹1,217, including taxes.

Travel to Israel Made Easy

Effective this year, Indian travelers can apply for an e-visa under a new programme launched by the Israel Ministry of Tourism. The visa is valid for up to 90 days and costs 100 NIS (₹2,422.05). According to JustDial, Israel has emerged as one of the top destinations for Indian tourists, with a 266% increase in searches, particularly in cities like Lucknow, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.

Go on a Safari in South Africa

South Africa has launched the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) for Indian and Chinese travelers, aiming to streamline the visa process. The South African Department of Home Affairs believes that even a 10% increase in Indian tourists can boost the economy by 0.6% and create more jobs for locals. Currently, Indian tourists account for just 3.9% of all international arrivals in South Africa.
