Russian Drone Strikes Ukrainian Railway Infrastructure, Injuring Workers

Russian forces have intensified attacks on Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, resulting in injuries to railway workers and damage to critical transportation assets. Recent strikes, occurring over the past day and continuing into March 4, 2026, highlight a deliberate targeting of Ukraine’s logistical capabilities.

Recent Attacks and Damage

On the morning of March 4, a Russian drone struck an empty train in the Mykolaiv region that was undergoing technical maintenance, injuring one employee of Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s national rail operator . The injured worker received necessary medical care. Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine, Oleksii Kuleba, reported the incident and shared photos of the damage on his Telegram account .

Prior to this, on the evening of March 3, a Russian drone attempted to strike a passenger train traveling on the Dnipro–Kovel route. Railway workers successfully stopped the train and evacuated passengers as a safety precaution. The drone detonated several meters from the locomotive and no passengers were harmed. The train resumed its journey after the threat was neutralized.

Escalation of Attacks

According to Kuleba, there has been a marked increase in attacks on railways since the beginning of March, with a total of 18 strikes recorded, averaging approximately six per day . These attacks have resulted in damage to 41 railway facilities, including 17 units of rolling stock, passenger railcars, locomotives, freight cars, and specialized repair equipment. Targets have also included railway depots and bridges, particularly those located near the front lines.

Previous Incident in Dnipropetrovsk

On March 2, a Russian drone struck a commuter train in the Dnipropetrovsk region, tragically resulting in one fatality and injuries to seven individuals, including two children . This incident was also reported by Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba via Telegram.

Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine and Minister for Communities and Territories Development, is actively providing updates on these attacks through his Telegram channel . Ukrzaliznytsia has confirmed the immediate evacuation of personnel following drone detection and is working to mitigate the impact of these ongoing attacks.
