Russian Athletes Return to Paralympic Competition as Neutrals
Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy – After a period of suspension stemming from state-sponsored doping scandals and further sanctions related to the conflict in Ukraine, Russian athletes are once again competing at the Paralympic Winter Games, albeit as neutral athletes. This marks a significant shift, allowing athletes like Anna Voronchikhina and Aleksei Bugaev to participate on the world stage.
The Road Back to Competition
The Russian flag has been absent from Paralympic Games and medal tables since the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, initially due to revelations of a state-sponsored doping scandal. Further sanctions followed the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, leading to an outright ban on Russian athletes at the 2022 Winter Paralympics in Beijing. Sochi 2014 hosted the last time the Russian flag was displayed at a Paralympic Games.
In 2023, the ban was softened, permitting athletes to compete under a neutral flag. This policy has been maintained for the 2024 Paralympic Winter Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
Recent Successes for Neutral Russian Athletes
Anna Voronchikhina, 23, secured a silver medal in the women’s standing downhill event, finishing 2.47 seconds behind Sweden’s Ebba Aarsjoe, with France’s Aurelie Richard taking silver. Her teammate, Aleksei Bugaev, added to the medal count with a bronze in the men’s standing downhill.
“It’s a really long time when we were without the flag, and I’m really glad,” Voronchikhina stated, expressing the relief and joy felt by her and her teammates. The return to competition is particularly meaningful for athletes who had been previously excluded.
First Paralympic Games for a World Champion
Despite being a two-time world champion in Para-alpine skiing, Voronchikhina is competing in her first Paralympics due to the previous ban on Russian athletes. She is scheduled to compete in five additional disciplines during the Games.
Voronchikhina demonstrated strong form leading up to the Paralympics, winning four medals at her first World Cup event in Saalbach, Austria, in January, and securing double slalom gold in Feldberg, Germany, later that month.
Looking Ahead
The participation of neutral Russian athletes at the 2024 Paralympic Winter Games represents a complex situation, balancing the principles of inclusivity with the demand to address past transgressions. Their performance in Cortina d’Ampezzo will be closely watched as they continue to compete throughout the Games.
