Russian Tourist Rescued After Drifting 20 Hours Off Bali Coast
A 64-year-old Russian tourist, Iurii Orlov, experienced a harrowing ordeal after drifting at sea for 20 hours while surfing off the coast of Bali, Indonesia. The incident occurred on March 5, near Water Blow in Nusa Dua, a popular location known for its rock cliffs.
What Happened?
Orlov was surfing with two friends when strong currents pulled him away from the group and out into the ocean. Unable to paddle back to shore, he remained on his surfboard for a full 20 hours before being spotted by a local fisherman, Agus Putra Yohana, 34. Yohana initially mistook the surfboard for debris, intending to retrieve it for his child, but discovered Orlov clinging to it. Newsflare reports that Orlov was remarkably calm during the rescue, even laughing and stating he was “tired” when approached by Yohana.
The Rescue Operation
After discovering Orlov, Yohana immediately contacted authorities. Eight marine police rescue personnel from Nusa Dua were mobilized, with additional support arriving from Jimbaran and Benoa Harbor. The Inertia details that initial rescue attempts were hampered by high waves and strong winds. Eventually, rescuers successfully reached Orlov and Yohana, bringing them back to the Nusa Dua Beach Hotel in South Kuta.
Orlov’s Condition
Fortunately, Orlov sustained only minor injuries during his ordeal. He was assessed and received medical attention at the hotel. People Magazine confirmed his relatively good condition following the extensive time spent at sea.
A Fortunate Outcome
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of surfing and the importance of being aware of strong currents. The quick thinking of fisherman Agus Putra Yohana and the swift response of the Indonesian marine police were crucial in ensuring a positive outcome for Iurii Orlov.
