Rwenzori Marathon 2026 Opens Global Registration, Boosting Tourism for Uganda
Kasese, Uganda – The Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon 2026 is now open to runners worldwide, marking a significant expansion for the event and a potential boost for Uganda’s tourism sector. Organizers have removed country-based registration restrictions and streamlined the payment process to accommodate international participants.
Global Access and Simplified Registration
Event team leader Amos Wekesa announced the change, describing it as a long-awaited upgrade designed to remove barriers to entry for international athletes. “Full online registration has been opened and there is no limitation anymore by country,” Wekesa stated in a recent announcement.
To facilitate global participation, the registration system now accepts international Visa and Mastercard payments, as well as popular digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay. Runners in East Africa can utilize Airtel Money, MTN Mobile Money, and M-Pesa, while those in West Africa have access to e-Naira, Paga, and MTN. European participants can pay via SEPA direct debit, and runners from South Africa can use EFT and prepaid vouchers.
Race Details and Registration Fees
Early-bird registration, available until July 1, 2026, is priced at UGX 50,000 for East African residents and USD 50 for international athletes. Fees will increase after this date.
The marathon, scheduled for August 22, 2026, in Kasese, offers three race categories: a full marathon (42.2km), a half marathon (21.1km), and a 5km fun run. The route traverses the equator and winds through the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, providing a unique and scenic running experience.
Economic and Tourism Benefits
The Rwenzori Marathon has gained recognition as one of Africa’s most visually stunning races. Beyond the competition, the event is expected to drive tourism to the Kasese region and Uganda as a whole. Participants are likely to extend their stays to explore nearby attractions, including Queen Elizabeth National Park and opportunities for primate trekking.
The marathon similarly serves as a qualifying race for the Comrades Marathon and the Two Oceans Marathon, adding to its competitive significance. Organizers anticipate a surge in foreign athletes, bringing increased revenue to the local hospitality sector and the broader tourism economy.
As Amos Wekesa noted on his Facebook page on March 3, 2026, the marathon represents a significant achievement, built “from scratch.”
