AMD Shatters GPU Frequency Record with Overclocked Radeon RX 9060 XT
AMD has achieved a new milestone in GPU overclocking, pushing a Radeon RX 9060 XT to a record-breaking frequency of 4.769GHz. This achievement, accomplished in collaboration with professional overclocker Splave and AMD’s Bill Alverson, surpasses the previous record held by NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090.
Breaking the Barrier: A New Record for AMD
The overclocking feat was performed using liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooling to manage temperatures during the extreme performance push. This allowed the RX 9060 XT to exceed the previous discrete GPU frequency record of 4.02GHz, set by Splave on the GeForce RTX 4090 in July 2024 . The new record also surpasses the fastest frequency achieved with integrated graphics, which stood at 4.25GHz on an Intel Arrow Lake CPU .
RX 9060 XT: Exceeding Expectations
AMD’s Radeon RX 9060 XT, based on the RDNA 4 architecture, has a stock base clock of 1.7GHz, a game clock of 2.35GHz and a boost clock of 3.13GHz . The 4.769GHz overclock represents a significant increase – approximately 52% above the card’s rated boost clock . Splave initially anticipated reaching a frequency of 4.4GHz to 4.5GHz, making the final result a substantial achievement.
Details of the Overclocking Process
While a complete breakdown of the settings used to achieve the record isn’t publicly available, the process involved the use of liquid nitrogen, liquid metal thermal interface material (TIM), and custom cooling solutions . AMD utilized an internal GPU tool to adjust clock speeds during the overclocking session .
Looking Ahead
AMD has indicated its intention to continue pushing the boundaries of GPU overclocking, with a potential target of reaching 5GHz in future attempts . This latest achievement demonstrates the potential of the RX 9060 XT and AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture.
