Ryoji Ikeda’s ‘data-cosm [n°1]’ Immerses Viewers in the Universe of Data
Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda’s latest large-scale installation, data-cosm [n°1], opened at 180 Studios in London on October 15, 2025, offering a unique sensory experience that charts the spectrum of data from particle physics to astrophysics. The installation ran until February 1, 2026.
A Total Sensory Encounter
Commissioned by 180 Studios, data-cosm [n°1] transforms vast datasets into an immersive audiovisual environment. Visitors are invited to lie down and view a large LED screen on the ceiling, surrounded by Ikeda’s meticulously crafted soundscapes [1]. The installation functions as a “giant microscope, a scientific apparatus, a clinical device, a monitoring system, and a window to an infinitely vast space,” according to 180 Studios.
Expanding on Previous Work
data-cosm [n°1] builds upon themes explored in Ikeda’s earlier acclaimed project, data-verse. Ikeda is known for his work at the intersection of art and physics, and his ability to translate complex scientific data into compelling artistic experiences [2]. His practice is described as being between art, science, and sensory research.
A Long-Standing Collaboration
This installation marks a continued collaboration between 180 Studios and The Vinyl Factory, which began in 2015 with the UK premiere of Ikeda’s supersymmetry at Brewer Street Car Park in London. 180 Studios likewise exhibited Ikeda’s interactive work, test pattern, in 2017, attracting over 100,000 visitors [1]. In 2021, 180 Studios hosted the largest exhibition of Ikeda’s work to date [1].
