By Lila Roberts, Entertainment Editor

South Korean filmmaker Ryoo Seung-wan has cemented his place as a leading figure in contemporary cinema, earning the moniker “Korea’s action kid” for his dynamic and distinctive approach to the genre. Born December 15, 1973, in Onyang, South Chungcheong Province, Ryoo’s career began in 1996 with the short film Dangerous Head.

Ryoo’s early life was deeply influenced by a love for Hong Kong action films, particularly those starring Jackie Chan. He cites Drunken Master as a formative influence, sparking a lifelong passion that led him to study filmmaking and eventually purchase an 8mm camera during middle school to create his own short films. He became his family’s sole breadwinner after losing his parents while still in middle school.

After working as a director under Park Chan-wook and taking film lessons, Ryoo made his feature film debut with Die Bad in 2000, which garnered him the Blue Dragon Film Awards for Best New Director. This early success propelled him into the spotlight and established him as a talent to watch.

Throughout his career, Ryoo Seung-wan has directed a diverse range of films, including Crying Fist (2005), The Unjust (2010), The Berlin File (2013), Veteran (2015), Escape from Mogadishu (2021), and Smugglers (2023). He is also a producer, screenwriter, and actor, demonstrating his multifaceted involvement in the filmmaking process. Ryoo Seung-wan is married to Kang Hye-jung and they have three children. His brother is actor Ryoo Seung-bum.
