South Australia Braces for Heavy Rainfall and Potential Flooding

South Australia is preparing for significant rainfall this weekend, with a severe weather warning in place for several regions. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecasts intense rainfall and potential flash flooding, particularly in the Adelaide region and the state’s south-east. Although the rain is welcome in some drought-affected areas, authorities warn of potential disruptions to travel and trade.

Current Weather Warnings

A severe weather warning remains in effect for the West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, North West Pastoral, and parts of Yorke Peninsula and North East Pastoral regions of South Australia. 9News reports that the system is dynamic and expected to expand eastward over the weekend, potentially reaching western Victoria.

Rainfall Forecast

The BOM anticipates rainfall of up to 70 millimeters in six hours today, with an increase to 80 millimeters expected tomorrow. Isolated areas could receive totals of 150 to 200 millimeters. A large tropical low moving south is expected to bring flash flooding as it shifts over the weekend.

Adelaide at Risk

Sunday night is identified as the period of highest risk for Adelaide and the south-eastern parts of South Australia. The BOM suggests that while Adelaide is on the edge of the heaviest rainfall, flash flooding could develop across the city as early as Monday morning.

Impacts and Challenges

While the rainfall will benefit dry areas, authorities caution about potential challenges. Heavy rain could lead to flash and river flooding, creating dangerous travel conditions and impacting roads and freight lines. Topsoil erosion and generalized flooding are also concerns, particularly in the south-east.

Conditions Expected to Ease

The BOM forecasts that conditions will begin to ease on Monday and clear by Tuesday.

Wider National Impacts

Gloomy conditions are also expected across parts of Victoria and New South Wales this weekend. Rain is forecast to persist across Sydney during the Mardi Gras parade. Sydney is still recovering from recent heavy rainfall that caused flash flooding in Fairfield East, resulting in over 490 calls to the State Emergency Service (SES), including 42 swiftwater rescues. Marine wind warnings are in place for coastal regions of New South Wales.

Rare Rainfall in Outback Queensland

In a separate weather event, the town of Birdsville in outback Queensland has received 93.2mm of rain in the 24 hours to Thursday morning, exceeding half of its annual average rainfall of 161.4mm.
