Ahmad Sahroni Reinstated as Deputy Chairman of DPR Commission III
Jakarta, Indonesia – Ahmad Sahroni has been reinstated as Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), six months after being temporarily removed from the position. The decision follows a letter from the NasDem Party Faction to DPR leadership regarding changes in Commission III’s leadership, as announced during a Commission III meeting on February 12, 2026.
Background: Suspension and Controversy
Sahroni’s initial suspension stemmed from a controversial statement he made in August 2025 regarding calls for the dissolution of the DPR. He characterized those advocating for the DPR’s disbandment as “the world’s stupidest people,” sparking public outcry, and criticism. The NasDem Party subsequently deactivated him as a member of the DPR, effective September 1, 2025.
The controversy coincided with protests over increased allowances for DPR members, and Sahroni’s residence in North Jakarta was targeted by a mob, resulting in looting and significant property damage. He later demolished his home in November 2025 following the incident.
DPR Honorary Court Ruling
The DPR Honorary Court (MKD) officially sanctioned Sahroni following his contentious statement. The reinstatement as Deputy Chairman of Commission III signifies a reversal of that earlier disciplinary action.
NasDem Party Dynamics and Potential Alliances
Sahroni’s return to a leadership position within Commission III comes as Rusdi Masse, the politician he replaced, has moved to the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI). This shift in political allegiance has prompted discussions within the NasDem Party regarding potential electoral alliances, including possible pairings of PSI General Chairman Kaesang Pangarep with either former DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan or Sahroni himself. These discussions took place during a meeting between NasDem and PSI regional administrators in Jakarta in June 2024.
Sahroni’s Response
Sahroni expressed surprise and gratitude upon his reinstatement, stating it was “strange to meet you again” and thanking those involved in the decision.
