289 people donated blood during a three-day drive in Saint-Affrique from June 30 to July 2, according to the Association des donneurs de sang bénévoles de Saint-Affrique. Organized in partnership with the Établissement Français du Sang (EFS), the event secured 14 first-time donors to help maintain critical blood supplies for patients in the region.

How did the summer blood drive perform?

The collection took place at the air-conditioned espace polyvalent Richard-Sainct. The event was a collaborative effort between the EFS and the local association of volunteer blood donors, supported by the Rotary club de Saint-Affrique Roquefort, the Saint-Affrique Racing Team, and the Virpama’Dégaine climbing club.

How did the summer blood drive perform?

Virginie Blaquière, president of the local volunteer blood donor association, stated the turnout demonstrates the “formidable solidarity” of the territory and a constant commitment from residents, even during the summer months.

The 289 donations mark a slight increase in participation compared to other recent drives in the area:

  • April: 262 donors (including 21 new donors)
  • January: 290 donors
  • Previous July: 268 donors (including 12 new donors)

Why is consistent blood donation critical?

Blood supplies are perishable and require a steady stream of donors to meet daily hospital demands. According to Blaquière, a single blood donation can save up to three lives because the collected whole blood is typically separated into three distinct components: red blood cells, platelets, and plasma.

The Établissement Français du Sang (EFS) manages the entire blood supply chain in France, from collection to distribution. Because platelets have a very short shelf life (only seven days), frequent local drives are necessary to prevent shortages for cancer patients and trauma victims.

When is the next blood drive in Saint-Affrique?

The next collection is scheduled for October 13, 14, and 15. This autumn drive will be supported by the AnnaFome Pilates association, the Néo Rétro Club, and Saint-Affrique HandBall (SAHB).
