Toby Samuel’s Ascent Continues: Back-to-Back Challenger Titles and a Grand Slam Aim

British tennis player Toby Samuel is experiencing a remarkable surge in form, recently securing his fourth ATP Challenger Tour title since November with a victory at the ITC Crete Challenger 2 in Hersonissos, Greece. The 23-year-aged’s consecutive wins in Greece have propelled him to a career-high ranking of world No. 171.

Dominant Performance in Hersonissos

Samuel defeated Czechia’s Maxim Mrva 6-2, 6-3 in the final, extending his unbeaten run to 15 matches, dating back to the M25 Vale do Lobo in February. Throughout the tournament, he impressively didn’t drop a single set. [LTA]

Road to Recovery and Current Momentum

Samuel attributes his recent success to a combination of consistent training and a return to full health. He faced setbacks in 2024 due to bone bruising, which significantly impacted his playing schedule. It wasn’t until midway through 2025 that he felt fully recovered. [LTA]

“It’s been going well the last half a year – been winning quite a lot which is a nice feeling and I’m just trying to keep the momentum through each week, one match at a time, not too far ahead and focus the efforts on each week,” Samuel said. [LTA]

Looking Ahead: Grand Slam Aspirations

Samuel’s immediate goal is to qualify for and compete in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. He previously participated in the doubles event at Wimbledon in 2023, reaching the last 32, but has yet to feature in a singles Grand Slam. [LTA]

“That’s the next sizeable goal for me,” Samuel stated. “It’s insane that I’m even going to be able to say that I’m playing Grand Slams. You watch it as a kid on TV like, ‘one day maybe I can be there’, but you don’t actually believe it – but now actually doing it feels amazing.” [LTA]

Other British Tennis Successes

The recent success isn’t limited to Samuel. David Stevenson also achieved a victory, winning his third ATP Challenger tournament of the season in Cherbourg, France, alongside Cleeve Harper.
