San Diego Bolsters Support for Domestic Violence Survivors with Continued Funding for Casa Mariposa

San Diego County and the City of San Diego are reaffirming their commitment to combating domestic violence by continuing to fund operations at Casa Mariposa, a vital shelter for individuals and families experiencing abuse. The collaborative effort ensures the shelter can remain open for another year, providing a safe haven and comprehensive support services to those in require.

County Supervisors Approve $1.5 Million in Funding

On Tuesday, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors approved $1.5 million to sustain Casa Mariposa’s operations through the next fiscal year. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria intends to propose a matching $1.5 million in the City’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget, solidifying the partnership between the city and county.

Casa Mariposa: A Lifeline for Survivors

Opened in 2024, Casa Mariposa offers 164 beds and trauma-informed services to individuals and families at risk of or escaping domestic violence. Since its inception, the shelter has assisted over 300 individuals and families. The facility provides a secure, temporary residence during vulnerable times, coupled with resources designed to help survivors rebuild their lives.

Statements from Leaders

“No one should have to choose between living with abuse or living on the street,” stated Mayor Todd Gloria. “By working alongside the County, we’re keeping the doors open to a safe haven where survivors and their children can uncover protection, stability, and a path forward.”

San Diego County Supervisor Paloma Aguirre emphasized the importance of a unified approach, saying, “Providing a safe and reliable escape for victims of domestic violence requires a united municipal front. With this joint County and City of San Diego funding, we are standing with survivors and safeguarding those most at risk, so Casa Mariposa can continue offering the stability and protection they need to break the cycle of abuse and begin their recovery.”

Comprehensive Services Offered at Casa Mariposa

Casa Mariposa provides a range of services, directly administered by the City’s Homelessness Strategies and Solutions Department and operated by SBCS (formerly South Bay Community Services). These include:
