Cajon Valley Union School District: Pioneering Career-Connected Learning in San Diego
San Diego’s economic future hinges on a robust talent pipeline, and the Cajon Valley Union School District (CVUSD) is emerging as a leader in preparing students for gainful employment. Through its innovative World of Perform framework, CVUSD is embedding career awareness, strengths discovery, and real-world learning experiences throughout the K–8 educational journey, addressing critical workforce development challenges in the region.
The Imperative of Inclusive Growth in San Diego
Launched in 2018, San Diego’s Inclusive Growth Initiative, informed by a partnership with the Brookings Institution, aims to increase the supply of talent, quality small business jobs, and thriving households by 2030. A key component of this initiative is ensuring 20,000 students per year complete post-secondary education within six years of graduating high school. But, talent scarcity remains a significant hurdle, with hiring demand consistently exceeding the available workforce.
CVUSD’s Innovative Approach: The World of Work Framework
CVUSD serves approximately 18,000 students across 28 schools in East San Diego County, a region known for its cultural and linguistic diversity. Recognizing the need to redefine career preparedness, the district has implemented the World of Work framework. This system integrates career awareness, strengths discovery, and real-world learning experiences into the K–8 curriculum.
Utilizing the Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional (RIASEC) career development assessment model, students explore professions aligned with their interests and strengths. They interview professionals, and present their findings through projects that connect classroom learning to real-world pathways. Career literacy is woven throughout the curriculum, enhancing both academic and professional communication skills.
Connecting Education to Future Opportunities
CVUSD’s approach is demonstrably impacting student perceptions of learning. A recent district survey revealed that 73% of students in fourth through eighth grade agree that what they are learning in school is significant to their future. This shift reflects a growing understanding among students that their education directly relates to future opportunities.
Expanding Reach Through the World of Work Foundation
To further expand these opportunities, CVUSD recently launched the World of Work Foundation, a nonprofit initiative designed to connect schools, employers, and community organizations around a shared vision for workforce development. This foundation will facilitate mentorship networks, employer partnerships, youth apprenticeship opportunities, and work-based learning experiences throughout the region.
A Model for Inclusive Growth
As San Diego works to close opportunity gaps and build a stronger talent pipeline, CVUSD is preparing students not only to graduate but to thrive. The district’s commitment to happy kids, healthy relationships, and a path to gainful employment positions it as a vital contributor to the region’s Inclusive Growth goals. Progress on these goals requires the scaling of innovative and intentional solutions by regional employers, and institutions like CVUSD are paving the way toward a more inclusive regional economy.
