Strawberry Production Gains Momentum in San Vicente, Guanajuato
San Vicente, Guanajuato, is experiencing a surge in strawberry cultivation, becoming an increasingly attractive economic opportunity for local producers. This growth is supported by training initiatives and a commitment to providing growers with the resources needed for successful, sustainable harvests.
Growing Interest and Production
Strawberry production in San Vicente has gained significant momentum since 2025. Currently, approximately 20 producers in the area are dedicated to strawberry farming, selling their produce directly to consumers through local markets, fairs and shops. Growers are utilizing varieties adapted to the regional climate and sourced from reputable nurseries throughout Latin America.
Training and Support for Growers
The Municipality of San Vicente, in collaboration with the Biofactory and the Ministry of Agriculture and Production, recently held the first strawberry cultivation training of the year. More than 40 producers, technicians, and interested parties attended, demonstrating a strong desire to diversify agricultural practices. The training focused on essential techniques such as fertilization and pruning, providing both theoretical knowledge and practical application to extend crop cycles, repair plants, and maintain stable proactive value.
This is the second year the training has been offered, indicating a sustained commitment to supporting the strawberry industry in the region.
California Strawberry Industry Trends
The growth in San Vicente mirrors broader trends in strawberry production. According to the California Strawberry Commission, summer plantings – which yield fruit in the fall and early winter – reached a record high of 11,503 acres in 2025, a 2.6% increase from the previous year. California Ag Today reports that these summer acres now represent nearly 27% of the state’s total strawberry acreage, which has risen to 42,885 acres a 1.3% increase from 2024.
The commission attributes the increase in fall-producing fields to strong consumer demand from September through November. Second-year plantings have seen substantial growth, increasing by over 50% since 2021 and surging by 600% since 2018, driven by the necessitate to reduce operating costs.
Looking Ahead
The continued investment in training and the increasing acreage dedicated to strawberry production suggest a positive outlook for the industry in both San Vicente and California. Supporting growers with knowledge and resources will be crucial to maintaining sustainable practices and meeting growing consumer demand for fresh strawberries.
