ERC, EH Bildu and BNG, three allied pro-independence formations and essential support of Pedro Sánchez’s coalition government, open the legislature on the day of its solemn opening by Felipe VI, attacking the King and denying the parliamentary monarchy as a political form of the State .
In a statement issued just two hours before the Head of State inaugurated the new stage of the Cortes in a solemn act in Congress, the three forces that declare themselves “independence, sovereigntist and republican” attack the monarchy, calling it an “institution anachronistic, incompatible with essential democratic principles” because it is a “hereditary and lifelong” institution.
They add that in the Spanish case, the antidemocratic character is accentuated by the fact that “it was imposed by the dictator Franco and was, to that extent, heir to Francoism.” Therefore, they point out, it is an establishment that “does not respond to the republican values of freedom, equality and democracy.”
ERC, Bildu and BNG maintain that true democracy in Spain will only be possible “from the break with the heritage, the bases and the values that the King and his figure represent” and they advocate that the monarch stop “exercising his tutelage over the citizenship and on governments and parliaments. Just like that.” They emphasize, “we will be able to advance in freedom and democracy.”
“The Spanish monarchy and the King of Spain do not represent us,” they affirm before ensuring that Catalan, Basque and Galician societies “majority reject the figure of a monarchical institution that is linked to the objective of imposing the unity of Spain and its laws, thus denying the civil, political and national rights” of their people.
