Urgent Public Health Alert: Highly Toxic Drug Mixture Circulating in Saskatoon Area
A critical drug alert has been issued by Saskatchewan’s health ministry and Prairie Harm Reduction (PHR) concerning the availability of a dangerously contaminated substance in Saskatoon and surrounding communities, including the R.M.of Blucher, corman Park, Warman, Martensville, Dundurn, Aberdeen, and Vanscoy.this alert demands immediate attention from individuals who use drugs and the broader community.
The Hidden Danger: Parafluorofentanyl and a Lethal Combination
Recent drug testing conducted by Prairie Harm Reduction has revealed a substance being sold as fentanyl that is, actually, primarily composed of parafluorofentanyl. This analog of fentanyl is considerably more potent, dramatically increasing the risk of accidental overdose. The World Health Institution reports that approximately 60 million people globally engage in non-medical opioid use, highlighting the widespread vulnerability to such dangerous contaminations [[1]].
Though, the threat doesn’t end with parafluorofentanyl. Testing indicates the presence of other profoundly dangerous substances within the mixture, specifically benzodiazepines (such as clonazepam or alprazolam) and xylazine, a powerful veterinary tranquilizer.
A Deadly Synergy: Increased Overdose Risk
The combination of parafluorofentanyl, xylazine, and benzodiazepines creates an exceptionally toxic and life-threatening cocktail. Each substance independently carries significant risks. Benzodiazepines depress the central nervous system, slowing breathing and causing sedation. Xylazine, while not an opioid, intensifies the depressant effects of opioids, further compromising respiratory function and causing severe hypotension (dangerously low blood pressure). When combined with the extreme potency of parafluorofentanyl, the synergistic effect drastically elevates the probability of a fatal overdose, primarily through respiratory depression. this is akin to simultaneously applying the brakes, the parking brake, and cutting the engine of a vehicle – the outcome is almost certainly catastrophic.
Identifying the Substance & Seeking Help
The contaminated drug appears as purple chunks and is typically smoked. Authorities urge anyone who has recently acquired drugs sold as fentanyl, particularly if they appear in this form, to exercise extreme caution and avoid use.
If you or someone you know is experiencing an overdose, call 911 promptly.
Prairie Harm Reduction emphasizes the importance of harm reduction strategies, including:
Never use alone: Having someone present who can administer naloxone and call for help is crucial.
Start with a small amount: Given the increased potency, a smaller dose is essential to gauge the drug’s effects.
know your source: While not always possible, understanding where drugs originate can provide some level of risk assessment.
Carry naloxone: Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. It is widely available and should be carried by anyone who uses opioids or knows someone who does.
This alert underscores the escalating dangers of the illicit drug supply and the urgent need for comprehensive harm reduction services and addiction treatment options within the community.
