Saudi Arabia Condemns Israel’s West Bank Land Measures Amidst Escalating Tensions

GAZA – Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday condemned Israel’s implementation of fresh land-related measures in the occupied West Bank, asserting that these actions aim to strengthen Israeli control over the territory and “impose new legal and administrative realities.” The move has drawn widespread condemnation from regional and international actors, raising concerns about further escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Saudi Arabia’s Strong Stance

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the recent steps “undermine ongoing efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region.” Saudi Arabia reiterated “that Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territories,” renewing its “absolute rejection of this illegal act, which constitutes a gross violation of international law, undermines the two-state solution, and constitutes an attack on the legitimate right of the fraternal Palestinian people to establish their independent sovereign state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with its capital in East Jerusalem.”

Israel’s Actions and Palestinian Response

Israel’s cabinet on Sunday approved measures to tighten its control over the occupied West Bank and facilitate land purchases by settlers, a move Palestinians have characterized as “de facto annexation.” The West Bank remains a key territory Palestinians envision for a future independent state. Currently, most of the area is under Israeli military control, with limited Palestinian self-rule in certain areas administered by the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the Israeli move as a “grave escalation and a flagrant violation of international law,” amounting to “de facto annexation.” The Palestinian presidency has called for immediate intervention from the international community, particularly the United States and the United Nations.

Regional and International Condemnation

Saudi Arabia is not alone in its condemnation. Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan have also described the move as illegal under international law and a threat to the “two-state solution.” The decision allows for the revival of land registration processes that were frozen in 1967, following Israel’s occupation of the West Bank.

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs defended the measure, stating it would enable “transparent and thorough clarification of rights to resolve legal disputes” and address what it claims was unlawful land registration by the PA.

Implications and Concerns

The recent actions by Israel, including those announced by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Minister of Military Affairs Israel Katz, significantly alter governance in the West Bank, potentially leading to expanded settlements, increased land seizures, and the erosion of Palestinian civil rights. These developments raise serious concerns about the future of the peace process and the potential for further regional instability.
