Pakistan Faces Energy Crisis, PM Shehbaz Urges Austerity and Resource Prioritization
Islamabad – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a national effort to address a growing energy crisis, urging both citizens and the government to adopt a more responsible attitude towards energy consumption. The appeal comes amid concerns over rising global oil prices and regional instability impacting supply routes.
Scarcity and Austerity Measures
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced on Saturday that the Prime Minister is requesting the nation to conserve energy through measures such as reducing unnecessary travel, embracing work-from-home options, utilizing e-learning in universities, and limiting non-essential entertainment. According to Malik, these actions are equivalent to saving valuable foreign exchange needed to secure fuel supplies. Dawn
The government is also implementing austerity measures, having already achieved savings of Rs27 billion in a special fund, which will be used to mitigate the impact of rising oil prices on the general public. Dawn
Global Oil Price Volatility and Supply Challenges
Malik highlighted the “unprecedented” surge in global oil prices, noting that crude oil prices have reached their highest levels in recent history. He specifically mentioned a rise in diesel prices from $80 to over $200 per barrel. Dawn
Despite the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Pakistan continues to receive uninterrupted crude oil supplies from Saudi Arabia via the Red Sea and from the United Arab Emirates through Fujairah, thanks to diplomatic efforts led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Dawn
Prioritizing Social Protection
Prime Minister Sharif has tasked the government with reviewing existing social welfare schemes to redirect limited resources towards protecting vulnerable segments of society. This includes considering the needs of those who rely on labor-intensive jobs, such as motorcycle riders and rickshaw drivers. Dawn
Government Commitment to Fuel Availability
The government has pledged to ensure a consistent fuel supply, authorizing refineries to purchase more expensive fuel and guaranteeing full cost recovery. The priority remains maintaining fuel availability for all sectors. Dawn
Criticism of Previous Government
Minister Malik criticized the previous PTI government led by Imran Khan, alleging that their handling of a similar situation in 2022 led the country towards bankruptcy due to a lack of preparation. Dawn
The Prime Minister has also rejected recommendations for further increases in petrol and diesel prices. Dawn
